  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound spaghetti pasta
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed canned tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  2. Add ground beef and break it apart with a wooden spoon into small crumbles.
  3. Cook the ground beef for 4 to 5 minutes until completely browned.
  4. Drain excess fat from the ground beef, then return it to the skillet.
  5. Add diced onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent and soft.
  6. Add minced garlic and stir constantly for 1 minute until fragrant.
  7. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes until slightly darkened.
  8. Pour in crushed tomatoes with their juices and stir to combine.
  9. Add salt, black pepper, sugar, and dried oregano.
  10. Reduce heat to low and simmer the sauce for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  11. Bring a large pot of salted water to a rapid boil.
  12. Add spaghetti and cook according to package directions until al dente.
  13. Reserve 1 cup of pasta cooking water before draining the spaghetti.
  14. Combine drained spaghetti with the prepared meat sauce in the skillet.
  15. Toss gently until every strand is coated evenly.
  16. Add reserved pasta water ¼ cup at a time if the sauce is too thick.
  17. Serve hot with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

Notes

Brown the ground beef well for deeper flavor. Do not skip cooking the tomato paste, because it adds richness to the dirty spaghetti recipe sauce. Cook the pasta al dente and reserve pasta water to help the sauce cling to every strand.
